Three Types of Weapons
Three types of weapon are used in modern fencing. Although each weapon is different in shape and use, their basic construction is similar – consisting of a blade and a bell guard.
Foil – a thrusting weapon which has a flexible rectangular blade and no more than 90cm in length and 500g in weight.
Epee – a derivative of foil but has a stiffer, triangular blade and a larger bell guard. It is 90cm long and weigh less than 770g.
Sabre – since it is both a thrusting and a cutting weapon, sabre movements and attacks are very fast. It is 88cm long and weigh less than 500g.
Modern fencing weapons are all equipped with electrical wiring to register touches on the opponent via an electrical scoring system. All three weapons exist for both men and women Olympic competitions.
